MY FEELINGS are not puffed about with every attempt to move them. MY TEMPER would perhaps be called resentful. MY GOOD OPINION once lost is LOST FOREVER.

[ Miss Bennet. ]

Dear Mr. Darcy,

Whilst I will admit that our meeting in Darbyshire was unintentional, I found it to be very diverting from the foul mood I had put myself in for a majority of that trip. Though it did not end well, of course referring to the news of my sister Lydia and Mr. Wickham, the time I spent in your home was a delight and I adored meeting your sister. She does you a great service in softening those otherwise harsh manners you displayed when you first came to Netherfield Park. Give her my very best regards, I would write her a letter as well but I am afraid I have little love for the pen and ink beyond what others write.

I apologize for making such an impression upon her, you say it is a good thing but I can’t help but feel sorry for your poor disposition for having to hear of nothing else. If you think it will help, she is welcome to write to me, I am sure we could be great friends.

You will have heard that my sister Lydia was engaged to Mr Wickham shortly after their eloping, this is in no small part your doing I am sure. Lydia mentioned your discovery of them and I beg your forgiveness of her because it was I who dragged it out of her. I thank you for what you did, though she gave me little detail, there is no doubt in my mind that you have likely saved from destitution not only myself but of both Jane and Catherine as well.

Perhaps if we meet again it will be under better circumstances.

Regards,
Elizabeth Bennet

Dear Miss Bennet,

I am pleased beyond measure that you and your family
have found peace once again, though perhaps not fully
restored. If I could offer the full of it, I would without
question. I have thought often as of late how best to
remedy such a situation as your distress when last we
spoke, but I fear that I would fall short no matter the
consequences I should face to achieve it for you.

You seem perfectly adept at penning letters, if I may
say so. Your proficiency, as always, in disarming me
further than I thought capable given my ever present
distaste for conversation is refreshing. I do hope that
you never find reason to muzzle such a talent! I would
listen to every barb you bid me, if only to hear you speak.

Do not think to apologise for giving my sister a friend.
I am afraid that she had not had a true one in a very
long time. Should I give her permission to write you,
you would have a letter every day. I would not subject
you to this; though I am sure such a correspondence
would be preferable to the current.

I would not take up your time, Miss Bennet. But Georgiana
is always desirous of company.

Yours,
F.D.

Dear Mr. Darcy,

I was not under the impression that your original letter required a response and though you have so clearly stated that this one need not be written I feel it would be a shame to leave you to your misery.

Your last letter explained quite thoroughly the pitfalls of my understanding, both in your reasons for the destruction of my sister’s hopes and your reasons to hate Mr. Wickham as ardently as you do. It was to your embarrassment that you put a stop to the marriage of my sister Jane and to mine that you explained the man that Mr. Wickham truly is, lest you lied to me though I can’t see a reason for your doing so.

You are correct in your assumption that we shan’t meet again, I expect you’ll likely never come to Netherfield again due to your own attested injury and I have little reason to come to Darbyshire. So let me take this opportunity to apologize for my transgressions against you that you have so clearly explained in your recent letter, I assure you they occurred without my intention nor my knowledge. Though if my rejection is as insignificant as you lead me to believe, I am inclined to say you will recover quickly.

For your sake I hope such is the case, I would hate to cause you further distress.

Regards,
Elizabeth Bennet

Dear Miss Bennet,

It has taken less than a fortnight since your quitting Derbyshire that
I have sought to write you once again. Be it wishful thinking or that
our Author deems it the cruelest of jokes, I know not, but your
arrival at Pemberley was a shared unfortunate moment for you and
I. Miss Bennet, I fear that I have done you a terrible injustice as to
hope for our initial parting to be the last, only to wish thereafter that I
see you again. Had I known such a request would be granted, I
would not have given it, for your sake. Though not my own, I admit.

You must know that my sister is increasingly fond of you. I had
always wished for her to have such an acquaintance that would
inspire her as you have and it would be remiss of me to not mention
that it had been something I had also desired upon concluding that
I must ask for your hand. Georgiana is, and has always been, my
first greatest happiness and I am glad that she has met my second.

Do you know that she has refused to speak of anything save for
your good humour and pleasantness? Far be it from me to
correct her. You are not pleasant, Miss Bennet. You are all the
satisfaction of a cool summer air and hot tea during a storm. I
have, of course, made an attempt to break away from such
discussions, but she would have none of it. I am of a mind to
believe that she means to see me further tortured.

Please know that you are, Miss Bennet, always welcome at Pemberley.

Yours,
F.D.

Dear Miss Bennet,

Your refusal to give me a reply has left me with little more than
a wider understanding of your disdain. Your regard for me can
be nothing less. It is from this conclusion that I have given
myself over to the idea that we truly will never meet again and
I have little to delight over, as I am pained over this possibility.
Had I been different in my delivery, in my very self, should you
have given me a response or do I merit so little worth to you?
I cannot think on the singular moment that I would give myself
the displeasure of ever thinking on you so constantly. It will not
do. I tire of your constancy in my thoughts, in my dreams. What
is more painful, Miss Bennet? That I wish for you even without
consciousness or that I wish for you more upon waking again?
I realise fully that you must find much humour in this. Who am
I, so arrogant and conceited and selfish, to be pained by the
mere rejection of a woman of your upbringing? Is this not how
you regard me, Miss Bennet?

I do not require a reply.

Yours,
F.D.
